Onside case study
OnSide, a team of business-savvy farming enthusiasts, have reinvented farm health and safety management. In 2016, new legislation changed the health and safety obligations of farmers. Existing paper based systems were impractical, so OnSide set about creating a mobile and web based solution that makes managing health and safety on farms easier for farmers, contractors, and visitors.
The system uses GPS mapping to create a virtual boundary around a farm, informing users of hazards as they enter. Timely information is then given to visitors and farmers, letting them know how they can keep themselves safe on the property, while also eliminating the need for paperwork.
The OnSide team had an idea, but they needed a partner with the capability to turn their idea into a reliable product that farmers and farm visitors love using.
“Jade’s longstanding track record of software innovation, and the team’s ability to quickly adopt our vision and present a compelling end-to-end solution, sold us on the partnership,” says Ryan Higgs, OnSide’s CEO.
“Jade’s longstanding track record of software innovation, and the team’s ability to quickly adopt our vision and present a compelling end-to-end solution, sold us on the partnership.”
OnSide’s idea was raw and they needed to build it out. “When we came to Jade we had a really good idea about what we wanted to do, but we weren’t sure how the technology would work. The first point of contact was Jade’s user experience designers. I couldn’t be more impressed with them,” says Ryan.
Initially, the two teams came together in a series of design thinking workshops to build OnSide’s idea into a concept ready for development. Starting with research and business analysis, Jade’s experts got alongside the OnSide team to get inside the heads of farmers and really understand the problem OnSide was trying to solve.
Next the user experience team visited several farms to understand the hazards people face, and what farmers need to do to ensure effective health and safety. One of the things this research uncovered was that farms are often out of cellular range, so the system needed to work offline.
Once the motivations and frustrations of the farmers were understood, Jade’s user experience and design teams quickly tested possible solutions and built an interactive prototype. “After a series of design thinking workshops, we were given wireframes and an interactive version of what the app could look like.”
Once feedback, research, and product design were complete, Jade’s development team took an iterative approach to build the system in a fast and flexible way. Through a cycle of fortnightly sprints and testing, OnSide were able to see demonstrable progress and try out the system to make sure Jade’s development team continued to build the right thing. “Jade had the scale and horsepower to build what we wanted and deliver it fast”, says Ryan. “Our team at OnSide stayed connected to the developers at Jade, enabling us to test the platform as the build progressed.”
“At Fieldays people were adamant that OnSide was the best designed product on the market. The feedback we’re getting from people is that the OnSide app is awesome. It’s really simple to use, and it’s robust.”
OnSide were ready to launch their system. Jade helped out here too, building OnSide’s brand identity and market presence.
Jade’s inhouse design team created a brand that reflected OnSide’s farming identity and a website that matched. “The design team came to us with a bunch of options and we decided on something that was clean, and cool. The design team helped with the look and feel of the entire brand.”
The marketing team also chipped in helping to build a marketing strategy and brand story. They helped OnSide with PR and events like Fieldays. “At Fieldays people were adamant that OnSide was the best designed product on the market. The feedback we’re getting from people is that the OnSide app is awesome. It’s really simple to use, and it’s robust,” says Ryan.
And while the marketing team were doing their thing, Jade’s development and operations specialists were working behind the scenes to ensure a smooth handover to Jade’s managed and support services team.
Farm health and safety was ready for a change, and OnSide recognised this. An innovative partnership with Jade turned their clever idea into a functional system, but the partnership didn’t end there. Since OnSide’s launch, the Jade team continue to make enhancements and improve functionality and reliability of the system.
As a smaller business, OnSide didn’t have the capacity to host and manage their own system. Luckily Jade was there to help with that too. Jade’s managed services mean that as OnSide grows they don’t have to think about expanding servers and capacity to match demand.
